Keeping the Reason Behind the Label: What Self-Coded Presentation Feedback Supports

Under review. Labels can summarize feedback while losing the reason behind it. In 39 written responses comparing reading presentations, two reviewers per response found mostly partial retention of a selected relation or qualification. Exploratory model analysis examined where interpretation added meaning rather than simply preserving it.

This secondary analysis examines 39 written responses comparing two reading presentations, alongside participant-selected labels and reconstructed researcher labels. Two reviewers per response assessed whether these representations retained a selected explicit relation or qualification; partial retention predominated. A separate exploratory, model-assisted analysis examined what the representations expressed and what analysts added. That interpretation was revised through assessments of source text and model justifications; it is not new human validation. Some paraphrases sufficed; other label combinations left relationships or attribution unstated. Label inventories retained criticism and use conditions, but writing could attach them to specific presentations or circumstances. Original judgments and consequential alternatives remain, including an unresolved near-paraphrase. The study asks whether a representation supports a particular interpretation, not whether one source is universally better or a coding taxonomy has been validated.
