Guide, Suggest, and Rewrite: application walkthrough

This simulated walkthrough shows a local demonstration of the writing interface using synthetic writing and answers. It contains no participant data or study findings. Some waiting periods are omitted. Below, “Narration” reproduces the spoken words; “On screen” describes the visual action.
0:00–0:12 Introduction
Narration. This simulated method walkthrough uses synthetic writing and answers, not participant data or findings. Actual-app footage is recorded locally; title and procedure cards provide context.
On screen. Explanatory title card on a dark background, visibly distinct from the application footage.
0:12–0:31 Procedure overview
Narration. The procedure card outlines an unaided writing sample, followed by three revision blocks, each with a different assistance mode and document. A questionnaire follows every block; reflection and closing questions come afterwards. We show one example counterbalanced order: Guide, then Suggest, then Rewrite.
On screen. Explanatory card listing the procedure and the example counterbalanced order.
0:31–0:48 Consent and setup
Narration. The setup sequence covers sound, orientation, consent, recording, and screen sharing. We advance through these checks before opening the writing sample. Identifying details are masked for anonymous review.
On screen. The real consent screen in the local application. The study identifier and the opening consent paragraphs are covered by opaque review masks; the heading, the spoken-summary controls and the remaining methodological text stay visible. The setup step then shows its instruction gate and its acknowledgements, which are synthetic: no Zoom recording, screen share or audible sound check was exercised.
0:48–1:05 Unaided writing sample
Narration. The unaided writing sample lasts eight minutes. We enter text without AI assistance. Waiting periods are omitted in this walkthrough, and labels identify any demonstration timer changes.
On screen. The unaided writing step. Synthetic sentences are typed into the baseline field, then the step is ended with its own completion control.
1:05–1:17 Thinking aloud
Narration. Before revision, the app presents thinking-aloud instructions. Writers are asked to explain their thinking while revising. We move from these instructions into the first block.

1:17–1:57 Guide
Narration. Each revision block allows thirteen minutes. Assistance uses prepared responses, without a participant prompt or live model call. Guide identifies what it thinks is wrong and explains why it matters; it supplies no replacement text. We accept the guidance, recording acknowledgment without changing the editor text. We then type a revision ourselves: the writer constructs the new wording.
On screen. Revision block one. The Guide panel shows its diagnosis beside the editor. Accept turns into Accepted and the editor text is unchanged; synthetic wording is then typed into the editor by hand.
1:57–2:09 First questionnaire
Narration. After each block, eight seven-point ratings cover perceived quality, control, ownership, effort, and attention. A ninth, optional question asks for the reasoning behind one change.
On screen. The post-block questionnaire: eight rating scales and one open question, answered synthetically.
2:09–2:49 Suggest
Narration. Suggest proposes individual edits, each with a reason, and shows what would change. Here, the proposal replaces a local passage rather than the whole document. We accept the proposal and watch that passage change in the editor. The local replacement is reversible. We then add further text ourselves; accepting the proposal does not end editing.
On screen. Revision block two. Accepting the Suggest proposal changes one passage in the editor, Revert restores the earlier wording, the proposal is accepted again, and further synthetic text is then typed into the editor.
2:49–2:59 Second questionnaire
Narration. The same nine-item questionnaire follows Suggest. We select ratings on the scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree, then move to the optional written question.
On screen. The same nine-item questionnaire, answered synthetically.
2:59–3:39 Rewrite
Narration. Rewrite supplies a complete revised document with one overall explanation. The choice concerns the whole rewrite, rather than individual proposed edits. We accept it, replacing the full text in the editor. The replacement remains editable. We make a further manual edit. This shows the distinction between accepting the complete version and making further revisions ourselves.
On screen. Revision block three. Accepting the Rewrite replaces the whole document in the editor. The replaced document is held on screen, then a further manual edit is typed into it, so the accepted rewrite is still editable. The typed sentence is synthetic filler text; the passage it replaced had scrolled out of view, so no selection highlight is visible.
3:39–3:49 Third questionnaire
Narration. The third block has its own questionnaire, answered about Rewrite. Only after this stage does the session move to reflection across the three blocks.
On screen. The third post-block questionnaire, answered synthetically.
3:49–4:04 Reflection
Narration. The reflection asks for at least three editorial decisions and their reasoning. Three further questions follow here, asked once across the documents: what was not used, what became easier or harder, and what was left unchanged.

4:04–4:21 Closing questionnaire
Narration. Eighteen closing items cover which mode to keep, recommend, and judge best; trust and reliance; voice; and two background questions, followed by nine written questions. The writing-background answer and these nine responses are optional: their boxes can be left blank.
On screen. The closing questionnaire with its structured items and written questions, answered synthetically.
4:21–4:31 Completion
Narration. Submitting the closing questionnaire completes the session. Study information remains available to read optionally; no further questions or required steps follow.
On screen. The completed session state in the application, followed by a closing explanatory card.
